Window Treatment Basics
Blinds, shades, shutters and drapes – what’s the difference? Learn the basics about these four types of window treatments in this video by The Home Depot:
Custom blinds feature vanes or slats that rotate to control the light, either horizontally or vertically, making them a great choice for rooms with changing light. A hard window treatment, they can be made from wood, faux wood (a polymer composite), metal, vinyl or fabric. When closed, blinds provide privacy. When open, they stack at the top or the side of the window. They do, however, have a thick stack at the top when completely open which may limit your view. If you are concerned about your view, you might want to consider a fabric shade instead.
Shades differ from blinds in that they are made from a softer fabric or similar material, offering several degrees of light control. Shades come in a range of opacities, allowing more or less light in. Do you want a soft light to diffuse through a room, or would you prefer blackout window treatments that block out almost all sunlight? You can do both with window shades. Shades are available in a number of lift options and offer a full view when raised.
Shutters are the cream of the crop when it comes to window coverings. They enhance the aesthetics of any room and are available in a variety of louver sizes, colors and frame sizes, and they also add value to your home. A favorite with interior decorators, shutters are hard window treatments that are cordless, cover the entire frame, and look great inside and out. Like blinds, shutters are made from wood or faux wood. If you want the look of shutters without the price, large slat wood or faux wood blinds have a similar appearance.
Custom drapes come in a wide array of colors, fabrics, valances and cornices and can complement all kinds of styles from simple to ornate.
