Wheelchair Accessible Basement Suite
This basement was transformed into a wheelchair accessible suite for a teenaga boy. The makeover by designers Morgan Michener and Reiko Caron gave the space a youthful vibe. See how the project unfolded in this House & Home video:
The design goal was to create a space where teenage boys would want to hang out.
Using a neutral white palette allowed the addition of pops of color. The bedroom has Ikea furniture and a bed with a Tempur-Pedic adjustable headframe. Black-and-white roman shades and a curtain separating the bedroom from the adjoining laundry room soften the space. As space was limited, bi-fold doors were chosen for the storage room; one door remains closed, creating space for the desk, while the other allows access to the storage room.
An artist created a colorful graphic on the side of the elevator, turning an otherwise large metal box into a “cool” feature.
The bathroom is a true wet room, an entirely open space. It is covered with classic white subway tile and a basketweave tile floor and has open cubbies and an accessible sink, shower and toilet.
