Wall Storage Units Free Up Your Floor Space
Wall storage units are a great way to free up floor space in areas such as the garage and kids’ bedrooms. If you want to set up a workshop, laundry room, play area or man cave in your garage or just want to stop tripping over your children’s toys, wall storage can help you reclaim valuable space.
Bedroom Storage
For bedrooms, modular wall storage units are available as shelving units or multiple cubes that you can arrange and connect to create the storage space that you need. You can buy individual shelves or cubes that can be stacked in tower-fashion on the floor and along the wall, while others can be mounted on the wall and fastened together. An advantage of non-connected stackable units is that they can be rearranged easily if your storage needs change. Shelving units can be placed contiguously, allowing you to create a bookcase or entertainment center.
For kids’ bedrooms, you can create a multi-functional reading and book storage space as shown in this Pottery Barn Kids video:
Garage Storage
Wall storage units for garages include pegboard systems, wall tracks, utility cabinets, freestanding shelving and heavy-duty wall-mounted wire shelving. You can also use hooks and hangers that can be mounted on walls or from ceiling rafters to store items like bicycles and ladders.
Pegboard Systems
You can buy or build your own pegboard system to store items on hooks. The hooks can be repositioned if your storage needs change.
Wall Tracks
A wall track is a metal rail that is attached horizontally to studs. Once the rail is is place, you can attach hooks, baskets and other holders. Wall tracks are inexpensive and can be installed quickly.
Utility Cabinets
Cabinets can be floor or wall mounted and are made from steel, aluminum, wood, composite wood or resin. They can be locked to keep hazardous chemicals and sharp tools away from children. You can find brightly colored cabinets that are not only functional but stylish.
Freestanding Shelving
Freestanding shelving units can be placed away from walls and positioned strategically to section off space for a workshop or laundry room. This type of shelving is available in wire, wood and resin; some units have locking-caster wheels, enabling them to be moved easily and locked in place.
Heavy-Duty Shelving
The open wire construction of heavy-duty shelving minimizes mold and mildew and by promoting air circulation. This type of shelving holds a maximum of 100 lbs. per linear foot of wall space. Some systems are coated in plastic to prevent corrosion and rust. An affordable alternative to wire shelving is to build your own wall storage units by attaching heavy metal shelving brackets to the walls and adding plywood, MDF or dimensional lumber shelves.
