Vintage Kitchen Renovation for a Family of Five
This old kitchen needed not only a makeover but also a layout change as it required space for moving around, doing homework and cooking dinnner for a family of five. See the vintage makeover unfold in this House & Home video:
In the new layout, the entry into the dining room was made wider and centered to make room for the addition of an island, eight-burner range and pantry. The kitchen was essentially gutted down to the brick and the plumbing and wiring re-routed. Spray foam insulation was used to seal cracks and holes and improve energy efficiency.
The look for the new kitchen is somewhat vintage, Old World and definitely classic, giving it a warm comfortable feel. For the flooring, which is also heated, hexagon tile was inset in a wood border. The gray cabinetry, a mix of lowers, open shelving and floor-to-ceiling pantry gives the kitchen some personality. Brass cabinet hardware, along with a brass faucet and potfiller, will patina over time and enhance the vintage look. Carrara marble was chosen for the countertops and the island, which is made of rough hewn hemlock. The back window and door combination consists of metal glass doors that open out to the patio.
