Use Orange to Add Light and Energy to Your Basement

A basement or lower-level family room doesn’t have to be blah. Head toward the “wow” end of the color wheel and use orange in this space. Learn how to choose the right shade and use contrasting neutrals to bring orange down to earth in this HGTV video:

Orange is a very stimulating color with loads of energy. Turn down the volume by choosing a shade with an earthy warmth, such as terra cotta. Bring in more light by using a strong contrasting trim color. This adds zip and lightens up dark corners.

With lots of contrast, the furniture can take a back seat. Blend it in with warm neutral tones.

Since orange is definitely the star in any color scheme, keep other accents to a minimum.

Use matte black instead of metallics. The soft finish does not reflect light, so it won’t compete for attention.

Orange is a great color for bringing light into a dark space. Use this trick to raise low basement ceilings. Up lighting bounces light overhead to give the illusion of height.
