Update the Look of Your Fireplace with Stacked Stone
Has your fireplace become a sore point in your home? You can update the look of your fireplace with stacked stone. Learn how in this DIY Network video:
If your existing fireplace is made of brick, you’re one step ahead of everyone else – just put mortar on and slap on the stone. If you have a fireplace made of tile or stone or an uneven material, however, you will have to remove it and install cement board first.
Stack the stones by following these steps:
- Install a ledger board at the base to provide an even surface to begin stacking.
- Mix some masonry thinset in a bucket until it’s the consistency of peanut butter.
- Choose a stone and apply the thinset to the back of the stone using a trowel.
- Working from the bottom up, place stones directly on top of each other. Be sure to offset the layout of the stones for a more random look.
- Let it dry for at least 24 hours.
- Finish up your handiwork with a mantel, and you’ve got a great rustic look for your room.
Remember to use small stones for a small room and large stones for a large room.
