Universal Design Concepts for Kitchens

Today’s kitchens are the focal point of the home, not just for cooking but also for eating and entertainment. The best kitchens, no matter what the layout, are marked by good design. The elements of good kitchen design are workflow, lighting and storage, which are also essential to universal design. Learn more about good kitchen design and universal design concepts in this video:

Workflow: The sides of what is called the “kitchen triangle” is formed by the linear distances between the sink, stove and refrigerator. The ideal perimeter is 20 feet; longer, and it requires too much movement for meal preparation; shorter, and the space feels cramped.

Lighting: There should be a balance of general lighting (room illumination) and task lighting (illumination of work surfaces such as the countertops and sink). Accent lighting should be added to set the mood and tone.

Storage: Maximize storage space by putting unused space to work by using organizers such as lazy-susans and wall-mounted utensil racks. Everything should have its place and be stored in strategic locations according to frequency of use.

A kitchen design influenced by universal design concepts means that it is flexible, easy to use, and beneficial to everyone regardless of age or ability. Features such U-shaped drawer pulls, varying countertop heights, adjustable height work surfaces and appliance with easy-to-read front-mounted control panels illustrate the concepts of universal design.
