Unfinished Basement Transformation

This small basement was raw and unfinished – just concrete, cement, brick walls and ducts. The challenge was to create a multi-functional space within the limitations of the duct work, water pipes and the uneven floor. See the results of the transformation in this House & Home video:

The guest area consists of a double bed with built-ins placed under the window; the bed doubles as extra seating during the daytime. The electrical box and duct work were hidden in the closets.

In the TV area, a bench under the flatscreen TV provides a surface and extra storage. The bookcase hides several water pipes. A sofa and chair along with the bed provide comfortable seating.

High-end vinyl floor tiles resemble hardwood, but they are soft enough to follow the curves and the level changes of the uneven floor.

The play area is located across from the stairs. Additional storage was created by installing shelving and baskets under the stairs.

Between the play area and laundry room is a powder room with shower. Two pocket doors allow the space to be closed off when in use.

On the opposite side of the powder room, the laundry room has a pennyround tile backsplash, gray cabinetry, and a stainless steel washer, dryer and countertop.
