Types of Palm Plants

Palm plants bring a tropical feel to indoor spaces. They feature fan or feather-shaped leaves on a long stem, and there are many different varieties. Most can grow indoors and outdoor; they are low maintenance houseplants that require moderate temperature, water and light. Learn about the different types of palm plants in this video by The Home Depot:

Areca (butterfly palm) has a smooth green or yellow trunk, with yello flowers when in bloom, and small edible fruit. It grows best in indirect sunlight (prevents leaf burning). Keep it in a smaller container to keep it small.

Majesty is a cluster of slender trunks and long stems that adds a classic look to indoor and outdoor spaces. The fronds feature dark green feather-like leaves. White flowers in bloom turn into red edible fruit. It grows best in slightly higher humidity and indirect sunlight.

Ponytail (elephant-foot tree palm) is small yet dramatic and is perfect for tabletops. It has flowing thin dark green leaves that resemble horse tail and white flowers that bloom 2-3 times a year. When growing, ensure it has enough light and allow soil to dry before watering.

Robellini (pygmy date) has bright green leaves with white flowers that turn into small red edible fruit. It has a graceful trunk covered in attractive texture of old leaves. An ideal potted houseplant, it should be positioned in full sun and watered frequently.

Sago (Japanese or King Sago Palm) is actually a cycad but has the same tropical look and takes 13 years to bloom. It has a pineapple-shaped short trunk with dark green, glossy leaves with stiff points that grow in a circular design.
