Transform Your Walls with Decorative Moldings

Hollywood Regency style comes from the era of old Hollywood glamour and brings to mind rich luxurious fabrics and moldings and tons of metallic details. Learn how to bring this style into your space and transform your walls with decorative moldings in this Lowe’s video:

Before you get started, think about your design. You can redo a whole room or just your closet doors. The over-the-top project presented in this video includes chair rails, picture frame moldings and door casings.

For this DIY project, you will need moldings, decorative or spray metallic paint and wall paint. There are many types of moldings available ranging from plain to very ornate. You will also need to rent a miter saw.

1. Cut moldings at a 45-degree angle using the miter saw. Don’t forget to gear up for safety. For each molding, simply insert, clamp it down, and bring the saw down.

2. Paint the moldings in your desired color(s), keeping them consistent throughout your design. Set aside and let dry.

3. Install the picture frame moldings (note that this procedure applies to all installations). Find the dead center position and measure up 9 inches. Then measure 7-1/2 inches in from the hinges and 10-1/2 inches from the doorknob in. Put one of the horizontal moldings on the door and double-check for accuracy. Start by inserting one nail in the center and double-check the measurements again. Apply the rest of the nails with a nail gun. Repeat this procedure for the remaining vertical and horizontal moldings.

4. For door casings, install 4 inches from the rim of the door, keeping it straight.

5. For chair railings, the standard height is 3 feet from the bottom. Work your way all the way down around the wall, then add your corner piece.

Once you’re done, style with accessories and furniture.
