Transform Kitchen Cabinets Into Beautiful Open Storage

Love your kitchen but want a more open look? Learn how to transform kitchen cabinets into beautiful open storage with the step-by-step tutorial presented in this video by Better Homes and Gardens:

You could simply remove the cabinet doors, but that doesn’t create a polished look. Follow these additional steps:

1. Cut out the middle stile with a double-edged pull saw. Remove any shelving and set aside.

2. Use a putty knife to remove splinters and loose wood from the hinges, and then fill the holes and any dings with Bondo, a quick-drying two-part putty. Let dry according to the package instructions, then sand the surface smooth.

3. Add extra style to the shelves with trim. Attach the trim to the shelf with finish nails and counter-sink them with a nail punch. Fill nail holes with putty. Now you can finish the cabinet.

4. Caulk any seams with paintable caulk. Alternate using your finger and a damp sponge or cloth to remove excess caulk. Professional Tip: Caulk should only fill the opening. Do not overlap the adjoining surface.

5. For extra impact, paint the back of the cabinet with a contrasting color. For the cabinet featured in this video, a dark gray from the lower cabinets was chosen to tie the uppers and lowers together.

6. Once the paint is dry, reinstall the shelves and fill the cabinet with plates, bowls and accessories.
