Top Three Decorating Mistakes
Have you delayed taking on a decorating project because you’re afraid of making a costly mistake? Knowing how to avoid mistakes will give you the confidence to start your own dream design and get it right the first time. Learn about the top three decorating mistakes and how to avoid them in this Smart Interiors video:
1. Choosing paint before furniture and accessories: While paint is in many ways one of the biggest parts of your design, it does not have to be the first thing you pick. Once you’ve chosen rugs, pillows, drapery, and furniture, it’s easier to pick a coordinating color. It’s harder to find fabrics you truly love once you’ve committed to a paint color.
2. Buying the entire matching set of furniture, such as a bedroom or dining set: While purchasing a set may seem an easy shortcut to getting a coordinated style, the end results tend to have less flair and personality. Settle on one major piece, then look for other pieces that will coordinate without being a perfect match. This will give you an end design with more character, flair and personality. Think blend rather than “matchy-matchy”.
3. A floating rug in a seating area: Floating area rugs are a big mistake because they make the room look smaller and disproportional. Choose a rug that touches all the furniture to anchor the seating. If the rug is too small, your eye has a tendency to go to the outside edge of the rug, making the area look smaller than it actually is. For a successful furniture arrangement, place all the front feet of the furniture on the rug. This way the rug disappears under the furniture, which makes the seating area look bigger.
