Tips on Mixing Fabric Patterns
When it comes to matching fabric colors, most people don’t have a problem, but when it comes to mixing patterns, they quickly become overwhelmed. Patterns, whether on fabrics, rugs or walls can really liven up a room and add personality. Get tips on mixing fabric patterns in this Smart Interiors video:
Mixing fabric patterns is as easy as remembering “large, medium and small”. If, for example, your sofa is a solid color or small pattern, use medium and large patterns for side pillows. Follow these tips to get the right balance:
1. Don’t put a large pattern next to a large pattern as they will visually fight with each other.
2. Mix pattern types such as a swirly pattern with a structured pattern (stripes, diagonals, or geometric).
3. Apply equal color intensities. Match pastels with pastels and jewel tones with jewel tones.
4. Use an odd number of patterns. Start by mixing three patterns, then as you get more experience, mix five.
5. To pull it all together, spread the patterns evenly throughout the room to give the design scheme proportion.
