Tips on Growing Orchids Indoors
Orchids are the easiest blooming houseplants you can possibly grow. P. Allen Smith presents several tips on growing orchids indoors in this eHow Home video:
The phalaenopsis orchid (also called a moth orchid) has beautiful blooms that come in a variety of colors and are a wonderful addition to any home. Just remember not to overwater them (just water them once a week) and place them in indirect light.
When you buy orchids, make sure that the stems are staked and unbroken. Try to find some with extra buds so you will get more flowers over time.
Customize your orchids by re-potting them in your own container:
- Remove them from the growing pots and put them in separate 1-quart freezer bags, leaving the stakes in.
- Arrange the orchids in a container. Once they are in place, wedge in wads of newspaper on the sides to hold them in place.
- To add more visual interest, replace the sticks one at a time with a kiwi vine and use jute wire to make natural clips. Take moistened sheet moss and cover the tops of the orchids.
