Tips on Expert Living Room Styling
When styling a living room, there are a few things you should consider when bringing in your finishing touches. Design Editors Joel Bray and Jennifer Koper present several tips on expert living room styling in this House & Home video:
Think of a non-functional fireplace as a beautiful space where you can highlight great objects such as modern vases. If you’re displaying artwork on the mantel, add just a few pieces such as asymmetrical candlesticks or a colorful bowl which will not distract from the art.
If you have a distinctive piece of furniture, add decor that plays off its features. The beautiful white contemporary coffee table featured in this video has a inset red lacquered tray. A large scale red coffee table book layered with a white book repeats this element. The addition of a few quiet elements lets the table be the star. When styling a coffee table, it’s important to choose items that fit with the style of the table.
There is no right or wrong answer when considering art and molding. It really depends on how you want it to feel. Try hanging the art in relation to the molding with lots of room around it, or even consider hanging art directly over top of the moldings. Different approaches creates great energy and makes each piece very special. Not every wall needs to have a piece of art on it; sometimes giving a piece negative space by having a empty wall next to it will let it shine even more.
Bring in natural elements with indoor plants and flowers such as a large ficus fig or orchid.
Add a conversation piece into your home, something you love that shows your personality or something that’s just quirky and fun, like the sculptural monkey sconce featured in this video.
Another great way to make a statement is using a piece of statement furniture that’s been placed in a peculiar way. The velvet suede sculptured chair featured in this video is placed at the entry point of the room so guests see it immediately when they walk in; it also completes the conversation circle.
Accent lighting is really important in a space. It adds multiple levels of lighting, and it can also be sculptural.
Adding textiles such as throws or pillows are a great way to add a bit of softness and color. It’s important to consider the piece of furniture that the accents are going on. For a low-lying sleek sofa, the pillows should have the same feel.
