Tips for Winterizing Your Landscape
With the arrival of fall, it’s time to think about winterizing your landscape. Get your garden ready for winter with four easy tips presented in this videofrom Better Homes and Gardens:
1. Clean up your garden: This is the most important thing you can do. Cut back, rake up and remove any diseased foliage to prevent the disease from overwintering so you’re less likely to see an attack next season.
2. Water your trees and shrubs: If it’s been a dry fall, watering trees and shrubs, especially evergreens, will ensure they stay hydrated all winter long.
3. Spread compost: Autumn is an ideal time to amend your soil by spreading compost over the ground. As it breaks down over the winter, it will improve your soil, especially if you have sand or clay.
4. Apply a winter mulch: After the soil freezes and daytime temperatures are no longer above 32 F, apply a winter mulch to your perennials to protect them from being heaved up and exposed to chilly air as the soil freezes and thaws during the winter.
