Tips for Turning Your Front Yard into Liveable Space
The front yard is often totally neglected, with the homeowners leaving the landscaping as is, or perhaps adding a tree, but it can also be a really nice asset. Get tips for turning your front yard into liveable space in this HGTV video:
Landscaping is key: Landscaping differentiates and finishes your home, and it’s the first thing your visitors see. Your home can have a beautiful facade, but if your landscaping isn’t up to par, it won’t look nice. Limit the varieties of plants. For example, if you need 20 plants, pick 3 different plants and repeat them. You want landscaping that accentuates the house and contrasts with the background. Use a large anchor plant, a medium-sized plant and smaller plants.
Pick a look and stick with it: There are a lot of landscaping styles, and it’s important to stick with one.
Be realistic about maintenance: If you don’t plan to be outside every weekend pulling weeds, trimming bushes, and putting new mulch down, don’t choose landscaping that requires a lot of maintenance.
Choose one accent color and stick with it: If you have a nice green background, pick either yellow, white or purple or pink – but not all of them, otherwise your landscaping will look overdone.
Create outdoor space: One of the easiest ways to connect your front yard to your house and make it feel like it’s part of the same space is to replace a window with a sliding door and create a front patio, porch or deck. Use composite decking or pea gravel, and plant new grass. Add a pergola for definition.
Don’t forget the kids: Create a play space that’s not a typical playground, like an organic obstacle course. Add a treehouse.
