Tips for Taking Care of Plants

There’s really no trick to taking care of your plants – you just need to follow a few basic rules for the best results. The main things are to plant them, feed them and water them. Get tips in this video by P. Allen Smith:

You want to plant your plants in good soil – that is, soil that crumbles when you squeeze it and then release it – and you also need to plant them in the right spot, which you can find on the plant tag. If the tag says “full sun”, make sure the location gets at least 6-8 hours of full sun; if the tag says “shade” or “partial shade”, then plant in partial shade for optimal success.

Giving plants the right food will ensure they build a good root system and structure that supports lots of blooms and beautiful foliage. It will also give the plants vigor, which means they will last longer. Mix the plant food into the soil before planting, then water everything in with a water soluble solution. Use a water soluble solution every two weeks to keep plants healthy and get an abundance of color.

How often should you water? You want to make sure the soil stays consistently moist (that means damp). Drip irrigation systems or soaker hoses will save you a lot of time. Always water the roots of the plants and not the foliage as wet leaves can lead to mildew, fungus and other diseases.
