Tips for Painting Your Ceiling

The ceiling is a commonly ignored surface. Take a different approach and think of it as the fifth wall in the room. Painting your ceiling can give you an entirely new feel and overall dimension to a room. Get tips for painting your ceiling in this Smart Interiors video:

If your ceiling is only 8 feet tall, and you leave it white, your eye is automatically drawn up to the cut line where the wall and ceiling meet. If you paint the ceiling the same color as the wall, the ceiling will magically disappear.

You should also paint your ceiling if you have a warm color palette. Ivory is a safe color, or take the wall color and make it 50% lighter. Either choice will make the ceiling feel more finished, and the ceiling will not feel like it’s coming down on you.

Another situation when you should paint your ceiling is if it’s a high ceiling. Using a color on a high ceiling gives the illusion and feel of a lower ceiling to create intimacy and drama. If you really want to add that “wow” factor, paint a coffered or a tray ceiling. Decorative ceilings are the ideal place to add color because it will further accentuate the architectural detail and make it the focal point of the room.
