Tips for Organizing and Storing Sports Equipment

It’s a known parenting fact that if your outdoor toys, bikes and sports equipment are well organized and easily accessible, your kids will play outside more often. Get tips for organizing and storing sports equipment that will get them under control once and for all in this Lowe’s video:

You can turn your garage from complete chaos to an organized functional space with these storage ideas:

  • Turn simple utility shelves into a sports equipment and ball storage unit by hooking four-foot adjustable bungee cords onto the top and bottom shelves, spacing them about six inches apart. You want them to be far enough apart to get balls in and out but close enough to keep them in, making them easy for your kids to put them away.
  • Sort your larger equipment into clear storage bins so you can see what’s in them. Stack everything on the shelves and hook items like hockey sticks and fishing rods on the hooks.
  • While adult bikes are often hung from the ceiling or wall-mounted, a freestanding bike rack is better for kids who will be taking them in and out more often. The DIY bike rack featured in this video is made from a simple L-shaped frame built from 2×4’s and has 45-degree dividers to put the bikes in. The spacing is 7 inches, but you can make it longer or shorter depending on how many bikes you have. Make sure the spacing of the dividers is wide enough to grow along with the bikes as the kids get older. Finish the rack with a quick coat of paint.
