Tips for Maximizing Your Curb Appeal

Of all the design elements inside and outside your home, curb appeal could very well be the most important, and there are some things you need to consider to get it right. Get tips for maximizing your curb appeal in this HGTV video:

To get your curb appeal right, you need to keep it all cohesive and do your research because you only get one chance to make a first impression.

1. Color: Don’t just choose your favorite paint color for your home’s exterior. You want to go with something that is architecturally and historically appropriate. For example, the home featured in this video is a bungalow; the bungalow lifestyle is usually pretty carefree and laid back, and bungalows usually fit into nature. This style of home is known for muddy greens and browns and sometimes pumpkin tones. This featured home has tree bark colors which are brownish grays, which allows the house to fit back into the landscape which is packed with pine trees.

2. Landscaping: As this featured home is kind of casual and laid back, English-style garden up front would make no sense. Instead, there are indigenous species which are low maintenance and easy to care for, giving it more of a natural free-flowing look.

3. Hardscaping: Hardscaping includes all the hard outdoor elements that are not necessarily landscaping. The pathway leading to the front of the featured home is made from pea gravel, which is very affordable and easy to care for. Leading from to the driveway up to the front of the house are boulders that bring you up to the porch.

4. Porch Design: This porch has two different zones. On one side is the lounge space with an outdoor day bed which can seat 3-4 people comfortably, or if you want to spend the afternoon ourside reading a book, you can lay back and even fall asleep. On the other side of the porch is a hammock chair. It takes up way less space than an actual hammock because instead of being drawn out from left to right it is more upright. Just to make sure your porch has the right amount of privacy when you don’t want your neighbors interacting with you, indoor-outdoor drapes are fantastic.

5. Lighting: An oil-rubbed bronze exterior sconce keeps this featured home beautifully lit at night.
