Tips for Decorating a New Home

When moving into a new house, it’s important to make it feel like home as soon as possible even if you don’t have enough furniture to fill it right away. Designer Sharrah Stevens walks through her partially decorated house and shares tips for decorating a new home in this video by The Kinwoven Home:

1. Don’t try to do the entire house at once: Start small and go room by room. Wait until that room feels finished before moving on to another room. If you try to do everything at once, you’ll be exhausted. You’ll look around and just see a tornado disaster everywhere and feel nothing was accomplished.

2. Prioritize rooms that will make you feel most satisfied: This is a very personal decision, and it’s about what will make you the happiest and what works best for you.

3. Start with a blank slate: Don’t be afraid to come in, remove whatever the previous owners left behind, and start fresh.

4. Use what you have even if it isn’t perfect: This will help you save money in the short term; moreover, you may find that re-purposing old furniture in new spaces works very well. Even if you’re thinking of changing your artwork and decor at a later date, in a new home, it’s better to decorate with what you have than to have blank walls and empty shelves and feel depressed in your new home.

5. Make a list of what you’ll need in the future: Make the rounds of your new home once you’ve finished moving in and make a list on your phone of what you need to complete it.
