When selecting reclaimed wood pieces, be aware that some pallets may be treated with toxic chemicals; look for a stamp that contains a treatment code. Discard painted pieces that may contain lead.
Old lumber may have damage or warping, so collect more lumber than you think you need for your project. Remove every single nail and tack. Discard any areas with embedded metal.
Reclaimed lumber is dirty and requires cleaning before you start your project. Clean with a pressure washer or with scrub brushes, soap and water.
Once the wood is cleaned, sand with increasingly fine-grain sandpaper until smooth.
Protect your wood with wax or polyurethane.
