Before you go shopping, take the time to compare different decking materials to make sure you get the best bang for your budget.
Pressure treated lumber is known for its durability and value. This readily available material can be treated or stained to complement the house. It also resists insects and rot but requires power washing, sealing and re-staining almost annually.
If you like wood but want to take it up a notch, choose redwood or cedar. These woods resist insects and decay and can be stained or painted or left to weather naturally.
For a real splurge, exotic hardwoods like ipe, teak and tigerwood boast rich colorations and resist mold and decay. They are also slip resistant and splinter free, bringing indoor comfort outside.
If maintenance isn’t your thing, choose composite decking made from plastic, vinyl or metal. These materials mimic the look of wood but require only periodic cleaning with soap and water or just a good rinsing with a hose.
