Consider the following design features when selecting a style:

  • Traditional: Furniture-style cabinet, ornate molding, subdued colors
  • Contemporary (Euro-Asian): Smooth cabinetry, sleek faucets
  • Casual: Natural relaxed style, more functional than decorative
  • Eclectic: Assorted blend of styles

Thinking about how much sink, counter space and storage you need will help you determine the best size and height for your vanity. You also need to consider plumbing, electricity and building codes when deciding where to install your vanity.

If storage is important, you’ll need to consider the type of vanity. Frameless vanities have a sleek, contemporary look with doors hung on the sides of the cabinet. Framed vanities have a traditional appearance with a box-like frame. Furniture-style vanities have distinctive hardware, rich finishes and ample storage. You may want to incorporate tilted drawers to allow easier access to stored items.

There are different types of sink mounting:

  • Self-Rimming: Surface-mount, rests on countertop. easier to install
  • Under-Mount: Attaches under counter of solid surface or natural stone
  • Integral: Formed from same material as counter, no visible joints
  • Vessel (deck mounted): Sits on countertop with faucets and spouts typically wall-mounted
  • Console: Ornamental table-like fixture resembling a vanity table

Lastly, consider your style and decor when choosing materials. Oak, maple or cherry wood is the most expensive option. Veneer is less expensive than wood. Laminates are synthetic, more affordable and easy to care for.
