Because the U-shaped peninsula cut the kitchen off from the rest of the main floor, the floor plan was changed, moving the door and window to the back wall and creating a new island with grooved detailing that floats in the middle. Open wood shelves were installed in lieu of upper cabinetry. The pantry, adjacent to the door, also serves as a mudroom.
