1. A right-sized fire screen provides both safety and visual appeal. Make sure to measure the height and width correctly before you go shopping. A screen with a silver finish and clean lines offers a nice modern touch.

2. Bring extra light and life to the area by adding items such as a fern and oversized glass jars on either side.

3. The mantel may seem like a great place to display greeting cards and curios, but sometimes random items can accumulate there too. If the space above the mantel allows, clear off these items and add a colorful painting to make the room feel more cheery.
