Storage Makeover for an Old Dresser
Do you have a tired old dresser? If you like to reuse and recycle, replacing one or more drawers with storage cubbies is the perfect fixer-upper project. Learn how to makeover a dresser for storage in this Lowe’s video:
While drawer space will be different depending on the dresser, the process is the same – building a box and dividing it. When choosing a dresser, look for drawer frames that are nice and flush with no obstructions.
For this DIY project, you will also need a tape measure, straightedge, table or circular saw, hammer and nail set or a pneumatic finish nailer, medium density fiberboard (MDF) and paint. Get complete instructions here.
Take at least two measurements both horizontally and vertically and measure from front to back as well. Base the insert on the smallest measurements and subtract an extra 1/8 inch all around for clearance.
Based on the measurements you take, cut a top and a bottom, two sides and any dividers and shelves you plan on. Use the top or bottom to check for fit before you start building. Slide it in and make sure it has good clearance.
Start building by laying one of the sides on a flat surface, applying glue, and nailing the bottom to the side. Keep checking for square as you build so you don’t get off track. Then add the second side and the divider in the middle. Flip it and add the top. If you add shelves, use spacers to support them and glue and nail the shelves in place. Allow the glue to dry. Check for fit, and then you’re ready to paint.
Before you paint, seal the insert with glue size. Brush the entire surface of the insert with a 1:1 mix of wood glue and water. Let it dry before you sand and finish it. Apply three coats of paint and let dry overnight before inserting it into the dresser.
