Steel Shelving Units – A Sturdy and Durable Storage Solution
Steel shelving units are a popular storage solution for heavy items in the home due to their sturdiness and durability. Heavy duty steel shelving is used in garages, laundry rooms and basements. It is also a common choice for industrial shelving units in factories and warehouses as well as retail product shelving. Steel shelving units can be purchased online or from hardware or home improvement stores such as Lowe’s.

Gorilla Rack black shelving units feature a steel riveted Z-beam construction frame with five adjustable particle board shelves and a loading capacity of 700 lbs. per shelf. These units come in two sizes, 48x24x72 and 36x18x72, and cost around $110 and $85 respectively at Ace Hardware. The Gorilla Rack also comes in two smaller units, 34x14x72 and 30x12x60, with an L-beam construction frame and a loading capacity of 200 lbs. per shelf; they cost around $70 and $55 respectively.
Ikea’s UTBY stainless steel shelving unit has two stationary shelves; the unit is 47 1/4″ long by 123 5/8″ wide and 35 3/8″ high and is priced at $269.. Designed for the kitchen, it may be completed with an UTBY tabletop to create a kitchen island, in which case the legs must be attached to the floor.
Edsal Industrial Steel Shelving is available at Wal-Mart and is an affordable solution if you have heavy-duty requirements. The five-shelf unit holds a total of 4,000 lbs. of evenly disctibuted weight on each unit and has a rust-resistant frame with a baked-on enamel finish. Shelves adjust to 1 1/2″ increments and can be assembled side-by-side or vertically. It costs around $160.
If you only need one or two shelves for heavy-duty storage, you may want to consider steel wall shelves. KegWorks stainless steel wall shelves are 8 ” high and 12″ deep and come in widths of 24″, 36″ and 48″. Two heavy-duty brackets are included. Prices range from $100 to $120. Seville Classics offers a more stylish alternative which is made from brushed stainless steel, measures 24″ by 8.2″ by 7.6″ and has a 5-lb. weight capacity. It is priced around $35.
