Closet Conversion

Select a closet that has the closest power source to it. This eliminates trailing wires which are unsightly and create a tripping hazard. Also, make sure the closet is deep enough to fit a desk, a chair and shelving. You may be wondering where to put everything that’s currently stored in the closet, but now it’s the perfect time to minimalize and discard or donate items you no longer use.

After your closet is cleared out, it’s time to paint. Choose a more neutral color to prevent the space from being too dark. Try peel-and-stick paint swatches with different lighting to make sure you like the color before committing to it.

Once painting is done, add shelves to create additional storage. Get the approximate measurements of your must-haves of office supplies, from your monitor to your binders. Make a plan on paper of the closet and the size of the shelves that suit your space. Whether you make the shelves yourself or buy them, make sure they are level and secure. If you’re hard pressed for storing some clothing in here, dedicate a shelf for that storage using the space on either side of the desk.

Closet doors hide the office from view, but it may feel a bit tight. Swapping them out for a barn door is a great option.

Corner Space Office

You can also create a home office in a living room, basement or bedroom corner. Find a room that will fit this workspace. The room now serves as as dual purpose office and living space for your family. Paint the walls in contrasting colors to delineate the work space from the rest of the room.

Choose a corner with an appealing background. This way, if you have pets or kids making an appearance during that video call, you aren’t having to juggle the interruptions.
