Small Space Design Mistakes and How to Fix Them
Do you feel cramped in your living space but don’t know how to make a change? Learn about the top five design mistakes people make in small spaces and tips for fixing them in this Better.tv video:
- Leaving your walls white: White walls may create an illusion of “bigger”, but they make your space boring. You don’t necessarily have to paint all four walls. Choose one accent wall and paint it a rich color and the other three a softer tan; this makes the accent wall recede and makes the room feel bigger. Hanging artwork on a dark color wall will break it up. Another alternative is to paint a soft rosy color on all four walls.
- Using short shelving and cabinetry: Taller cabinetry and shelving that goes up to the ceiling brings the eye upward and makes the ceiling seem higher and the room larger. It provides the additional benefit of extra storage.
- Using small-scale accessories: Think big. Use tall lamps to add scale and height to your room and make it feel larger. Hang larger artwork on the walls, or pair several pieces up in a group.
- Not using mirrors: A mirror is a great tool in a small space. It not only makes the room seem larger but also reflects a lot of natural light. Mounting a mirror on a wall directly opposite a window will reflect a lot of light and brighten things up. Select a big mirror.
- Using all wood furniture: Most people buy furniture in sets. Mix it up. Incorporate glass top tables to give a sense of airiness and openness and make your space more interesting.
