Six Tips for Adding Texture to Your Home Décor
You have the color, the furniture, the accessories – so what’s the one thing your house is missing? It’s texture, and it’s the element that will take your decor from basic to designer level. This video by Better Homes and Gardens presents six tips for adding texture to your home décor:
While it’s true that every surface has some sort of texture, what’s often missing is variety. So where do you start?
1. Look to textiles and fabrics, such as linen, which is inviting and cozy. The same goes for velvets and chunky wovens. Layer two types of rugs, like a sisal rug and a vintage kilim, to add even more interest.
2. Add in leathers which are sleek and smooth and provide contrast to nubby fabrics like velvets and linens.
3. Texture goes beyond just fabrics and textiles and includes wood. The coffee table featured in this video adds the visual quality of grained wood, but the lacquered finish means it’s smooth to the touch.
4. Metals also add texture, whether they’re sleek and shiny or antiqued and hammered.
5. Nature is another great source. Add a plant or simple arrangement for instant impact.
6. You can also pair different textures together. Try wovens with wood finishes, clear acrylics with metals and ceramics, and multiple types of fabrics. When it comes to texture, even small details like nailhead trim and accessories, woven baskets, books and ceramics all make a difference.
So when it comes to texture, it’s all about variety, playing up contrast, and details. Above all, use it to your decorating advantage.
