Seven Themed Christmas Tree Ideas
Decorating a Christmas tree like a pro is easier than it looks. See seven themed Christmas tree ideas to inspire you this holiday season in this Lowe’s video:
To create a designer tree, you need the following building blocks:
- Lights: Lights are the foundation of your Christmas tree design. The rule of thumb is 100 lights for every 1.5 vertical feet, but if you love lights, feel free to add more. if you are using lights from previous years, be sure to always check that your lights are working before you string them on your tree. Many artificial trees are pre-lit and have the lights already integrated, but you can always add more. As for the debate of colored vs. white lights, it really depends on what look and feel you’re going for.
- Garlands: Garlands can be anything that you’re draping on your tree around or vertically. They can be ribbons, strands of popcorn, fabric, or an actual garland.
- Ornaments: There are no firm rules for ornaments, but here are a few tips. Start with you favorite ornaments to give them a prime location where you can best see them. Add your largest ornaments, and then fill in with the medium and small ones. Make sure you’re not just putting ornaments on the outside edges of the tree. A designer secret is putting ornaments deeper into the branches so that you can ensure that your tree has visual depth.
- Real vs. Artificial Trees: Real trees are traditional and nostalgic and come in a variety of types and shapes, and they have that wonderful fresh cut smell. Artificial trees are convenient and less messy, affordable over the long term and are re-usable from year to year. Whatever your preference, either will work for the themed trees presented in this video.
Here’s how to decorate a Christmas tree based on the following themes:
1. Fashion inspired rustic tree: This tree is decorated with white lights, red and silver balls, silver bell ornaments, pine cone picks, wood slice ornaments, buffalo check garland and a matching tree skirt. Instead of buffalo check, you can look in your own closet and get inspired by a different type of fabric. To make wood slice ornaments, cut wood slices from birch logs or from your real tree, paint them with black chalkboard paint and add your favorite seasonal words with a white paint marker. You can use either white or colored lights.
2. Coastal tree: Christmas time usually invokes ideas of cold wintery weather, but if you live in a warmer location, Christmas can look a little different. This tree is decorated with white lights, blue and white ornaments, and non-traditional nautical elements such as rope garland, starfish ornaments, DIY sand and shell ornaments and a woven tree collar.
3. Flocked tree: Dream about a white Christmas with a beautiful flocked tree decorated with white lights, red and white ball ornaments, berry picks, red bows and a silver tree collar. Floral picks add visual interest and help fill in any bare spots on the tree. Use hooks to gather together two ornaments to give them a different look. A tree collar is an awesome alternative to a traditional tree skirt; adding red electrical tape around the edges adds an extra pop.
4. Modern tree: Christmas decor tends to lean a bit traditional, but if you like modern style, check out this slim flocked tree decorated with red lights, copper pipe fitting ornaments, hexagon marble floor tile ornaments, hand drawn ornaments created with a Sharpie marker, and a gold tree collar. If you prefer, you can use a traditional evergreen tree.
5. Color-block tree: Color-blocking ornaments have trended the last couple years, and this color-block tree takes the trend a step further. Use three to five colors depending on the size and shape of your tree. The tree featured in this video uses red, pink and teal spray paint and ornaments. Use a white tree and spray each block a different color. Artificial trees work great because they’re already split into sections. You can use matte finish paint or a glossy finish paint if you want a more glam look.
6. Homespun tree: This eclectic tree is decorated with handmade kid ornaments that you’ve collected over the years, along with colored lights, a bow topper, jumbo ball ornaments and a hand print tree skirt. Additional oversized colored lights add more whimsy and play.
7. Vintage inspired tree: Vintage can mean a lot of different things and represents a lot of different time periods. The tree featured in this video has a Victorian vibe and is decorated with white lights, a pink and burgundy color palette, flower picks, star topper, vintage style ornaments and a coordinated skirt. When it comes to a vintage look, you could have authentic vintage ornaments or new ornaments that are meant to look old.
