Salvaged Wood Platform Bed
Of course, the focal point of the bedroom is the bed, and this one was old and boring. See how it was transformed into a beautiful platform bed using salvaged wood in this DIY Network video:
Since the existing wall already serves as the headboard, the makeover will focus on building a beautiful elegant bed frame by transforming salvaged materials into a unique platform bed. The salvaged materials used for this project include oak posts from a grand stairway and oak door trim from a Victorian house and salvaged lumber from a dismantled barn.
The posts were lightly sanded and re-stained in the original color.
The internal frame base was built using the salvaged lumber to the dimensions of a standard queen-sized bed. The door casings were attached to the internal frame to act as decorative side and end boards. To add strength and keep the wood from warping over time, the casings were attached to the frame base using steel corner brace brackets and reinforced along the inside joints using metal recycled from the original bed frame.
The newel posts were cut to 18 inches for the legs. Fortunately, they were tall enough that a fifth 18″ leg was crafted out of the leftovers for a center support. Because the posts were hollow, they were filled with scrap wood and glue to keep them sturdy.
Two long center braces were cut to the length of the bed and secured to the top of the center foot with wood screws. The entire frame was then placed atop the feet and secured with lag bolts. The center braces were set into place and attached to the frame at both ends. Slats were cut to size, placed horizontally every two inches across the frame and secured with screws. Then it was ready for the mattress.
Artwork in a vintage frame was layered on the wall in lieu of a headboard.
With the transformed bed, this modest bedroom is now unique and timeless, making it the perfect place to relax at the end of the day.
