Picnic Table Hack for Built-In Storage

A picnic table has been a tried-and-true backyard staple for generations, but it doesn’t have to look or function like a plain table. This picnic table hack for built-in storage adds a custom feature that’s super cool and multifunctional. Learn more about this DIY project in this Lowe’s video:

This project adds a custom center console to the picnic table that you can use as a decorative planter, food station or drink cooler.

Remove any support boards, then remove the center board. Measure off a 36-inch area for the trough and mesure the width of the board. Build the 36-inch trough, making it 6 inches deep. Cut two holes with a hole saw on the bottom if you are going to use it for ice or plants and add rubber plugs into the hole; these can be removed for quick and easy drainage. Attach the trough to the bottom of the table using angle iron. Put in new suppots. Cut the center board to create an opening for the trough. Cut and add new angle brackets between the sides of the table and the trough for support. Paint the base and legs with black paint, then use a rustic beige stain on the tabletop and benches. Be sure to apply a urethane after staining to help protect the wood from moisture.
