Picnic Table Hack for a Kids’ Activity Zone
This picnic table hack for a kids’ activity zone will get young kids out of the house and keep them occupied for hours on end – both playing and eating. Learn more about this DIY project in this Lowe’s video:
This project adds the following features to the picnic table:
1. Hidden sand and water table compartment: Starting with a plastic bin, determine the width and remove the corresponding boards from the table. The bin will drop down below the lip of the table. Cut the tabletop boards into thirds; the left and right sides will be permanently attached to the table, while the middle section will act as a removable lid. Attach the three middle boards together with 2×4’s, then drill a small hole down; this will help you get the lid off and on. Build the undertable U-shaped supports for the bin and attach to the bottom of the table. Flip the table over and put the bin inside.
2. Colorful paint treatment: Use bright exterior paint colors in a satin finish so it will be easy to clean up.
3. Fun storage options: Screw in S-hooks at the ends of the table to hold buckets for sand and water toys.
