Open Concept Renovation of a Small Home

The small home of House & Home Style Editor Sarah Hartill became smaller as her family grew. An open concept renovation together with a small home addition and custom decor created a more liveable space. See the results of this transformation in this House & Home video:

The entire home is painted in white which is clean and works well as a backdrop for other colors. The living room features tier shutters, Turkish rugs and an apothecary cabinet. A banquette with storage space and indoor/outdoor fabric in the dining room provides extended storage for the kitchen.

The wall between the kitchen, dining room and living room was removed to make space for a large kitchen island with a carrara marble countertop and black Kohler faucet and also provided a larger area for entertaining. White subway tiles, Ikea cabinetry with brass hardware and a five-burner range with potfiller were installed in the kitchen.

Floor-to-ceiling natural linen drapes adds softness to the principal bedroom, and a full wall of Ikea units provides storage. The child’s bedroom has two beds with understorage butted up against each other along one wall.

The finishing touches to the main bathroom included a chair rail, marble tile, contemporary fixtures for the sink and tub, and a traditional style toilet.
