Multifunctional Family Basement Transformation

This underutilized basement, unique in that it’s the main entrance to the home, did not give a great first impression. With five easy DIY projects in one weekend, DIY expert Monica Mangin creates a combined playroom/mudroom with a bed that accommodates overnight guests. See the details of this multifunctional family basement transformation in this Lowe’s video:

1. The walls were painted a light gray to neutralize the space.

2. A DIY Murphy bed made from 3/4-inch plywood and outside faux doors and flanked by stock cabinetry provides a space for guests as well as additional storage.

3. Applying peel-and-stick wood-look flooring to the walls along with hooks and wall-mounted shelves sectioned off a mudroom zone.

4. An office area was created under the stairs using stock cabinetry, a desktop and several white floating shelves.

5. A climbing wall in the shape of a mountain range was made from pieces of plywood painted in different shades of green and rock-shaped hand holds.
