Modern Rustic Home Office

Most of our offices are really cluttered. Our minds are busy, our days are busy, and there’s stuff everywhere. The office should be a place that you walk into and your mind is instantly clear. Designer Amy Matthews presents the design features of her modern rustic home office along with the kid’s room in this video by The Design Network:

When combining modern rustic design with an office space, think heavy on modern and think incredibly sleek. That means the decor in the room has to be totally clean – clean lines, incredibly simple, a space where you can sit down and focus on the thing that you want to.

Bringing in rustic elements means making it comfortable – a warm leather gray chair in the corner, a cozy blanket, finding that really cool piece at an antique store, that old ladder that becomes your bookshelf, thinking outside the box and adding these tiny little elements to give it character, yet absolutely keeping it streamlined.

In Amy’s space, the windows open up to the beautiful backyard area and provide stunning light throughout the day. An old ladder serves as a magazine rack. In lieu of an office chair, an old barstool adds an industrial rustic feel. Instead of a large bookshelf, floor baskets store needed items. A hanging light illuminates the reading corner.

Comfort is key to designing a kid’s room, which means familiarity and family. Look for things in your attic that evoke family and heritage. This kid’s room is furnished with old trunks, vintage toys, a wall basket, beanbag chair and bench. Maps make great wall art. A wall sconce and a fixture over the closet provide much-needed light.
