Metal vs Asphalt Roofing
When it comes time to replace your roof, should you choose metal or asphalt material for your home? Your location is certainly a major factor in making this decision. This video by Tadlock Roofing & Solar compares metal vs. asphalt roofing based on energy savings, life span and warranty in warm weather climates such as Florida:
Asphalt is a short-term solution with no return on investment. Asphalt shingles provide protection, but they will wear out in warm weather climates in about 17-20 years. Note that the 25- or 30-year warranty that commonly comes with asphalt only covers manufacturer defects, not deterioration from sun exposure.
Metal roofing is a long-term solution with a return on investment. There are two types of metal roofing systems: standing seam roof and steel shingle. There is 30% less heat transfer into the attic space (up to 45% less with an Energy Star rated system), in contrast to asphalt. This means less air conditioning expense. Metal roofing not only has a longer life span but also provides energy savings, giving you a better return on investment.
