Maximalism Design
Maximalism is really about going over the top, taking that one thing you want to focus on that’s either a reflection of your style or your personality and going all out with applying it to your space. Learn more about this style in this Build with Ferguson video:
The history of maximalism is rooted in the classic ornate or baroque interiors that you see in mansions. Today, maximalism is the reaction to minimalism, but you still really want it to come across as a modern interior. Some things that can go into this look are family heirlooms, collection pieces or found objects that speak to you personally, saturated colors, and patterns like floral, animal and abstract prints.
A really great place to start with maximalist design is with wallpaper. Wallpaper adds a lot of personality to a space. It can be floral or abstract, and there’s a lot of opportunity to match it to whatever style you have. If you want to go with a classic floral look, you can do a grand millenial type of maximalism. If you want to go with the abstract, you can go with a more modern type of maximalism.
If you’re doing a remodel, it’s good to start with a small room like a half bath where you can really pack in those elements. It’s a good opportunity to let your personality or interests show through, and more is more, but you definitely don’t want to go over the top and make it a mess. Just remember that being bold is really important because that’s what’s going to make the space work for you and really nail that maximalist aesthetic.
