Maintaining Your Home’s Interior

Here is a to-do list for repairing and maintaining the interior of your home:

  • Based on the material, seal your countertops as recommended.
  • Check all switches and outlets for drafts around the faceplates. Stop drafts by using plastic plugs or spray foam.
  • Test the carbon monoxide and smoke alarm batteries in the spring and in the fall.

  • Inspect the dishwasher and washing machine hoses. You will need to replace them if they are dried out or cracked.
  • Check the kitchen fan vent at least once a year and make sure that it has no accumulated grease.
  • Improve indoor air quality by vacuuming vent covers and bathroom ventilation fan grills twice a year.
  • To prevent water damage and insect invasion, look for leaks under all sinks.
  • Inspect grout between tiles and add new grout and seal as necessary. You should also check the base of your shower or tub to see if it needs recaulking. Neglecting these tasks can lead to mold, mildew and water infiltration damage.
  • Vacuum the refrigerator coils every six months.
  • Once a year, clean your dryer vents. Flexible vent ducts collect lint, which can become a fire hazard. Replace a flexible duct with a metal duct. Check for blockage on the outside cover and obstructions in the dryer vent hose.
  • Check your attic insulation for shifting and compression. You may want to consider replacing your insulation with newer and more efficient foam-insulation products.
