Low-Maintenance Asters

Asters are low-maintenance, sustainable perennials forming dense root systems that allow them to thrive for many seasons without fuss or trouble. Learn more in this Better Homes and Gardens video:

Many asters are North American natives broadly adapted to a variety of growing conditions and climates. Asters are banner perennials for late summer and fall color, extending interest until the very end of the growing season. Bees, butterflies and other pollinators love aster’s nectar-rich flowers, which provide them with sustenance till the very end of the fall.

  • Tatarian aster is a novel aster primarily because of its height. It’s one of the last asters to bloom late into the fall with starry azure blue flowers.
  • Unlike other asters, Avondale, a cultivar of Heartleaf aster, sports hundreds of starry little flowers in shades of blue.
  • While many asters grow in full sun, Eastern Star is made for shade, peppering its way through hostas and other fall perennials to carry the shade garden to a strong fall finish.
  • Some asters even do well in containers, like Aster Nova-belgii.
