Lava Flow Incorporated into a Home Renovation

Architect David Wingate talks about the way the ancient remnants of a lava flow have been incorporated into a 1960’s home renovation in this Trends video:

This house required expansion, but the renovation required working around an old lava flow. presenting aesthetic as well as structural issues. The glass and the rock needed to move in the same way to prevent leaks and cracks. The rock itself also needed to be framed in such a way so that the transition looked seamless between the inside and the outside.

While the existing design blocked the lava flow from view, the redesign embraced it, incorporating it into the new lobby entryway. Framed in glass, it remains a part of the visual experience as one walks around the ground floor.
