Laundry Room and Mudroom Transformation

This small multi-purpose room served as a catch-all junk room for a very long time and needed to be turned into a functional space. The washer and dryer were always there, but the room needed to be outfitted and organized with storage for everyday items – in other words, a combination laundry room and mudroom. See the transformation in this House & Home video:

This 9′ x 13′ space flows into the kitchen, so it needed to look good. The makeover also had to be done on a budget, so the flooring couldn’t be replaced, but the new design uses it as a palette for the whole room. The walls were painted in a soft bluish-green which was picked up from the floor tile, while an area rug warms up the space makes the underlying floor recede into the background.

To save money, the plumbing was left as is, and a space-saving stacked washer was installed. A 24-inch corner cabinet was squeezed in, leaving room for a sink, counter space and storage space underneath. A generous tile backsplash created a wet area, and an upper shelf doubles as a hanging system.

The corner cabinet has plenty of storage space for bulky items like winter jackets and sports equipment. An adjacent tall cabinet is useful as the home does not have a front closet. The window position did not allow a third cabinet with the same depth of the other two, so a shallower one disguised with mirrors was installed, adding a full length mirror to the room and allowing reflection of light throughout the room. A few extra floating shelves fill in the space near the window and provide extra storage. An upholstered bench adds funtionality and makes the space feel more like a dressing room.
