Kitchen Remodeling Design – Layout Considerations
There are five facts that you need to know about your kitchen layout before you plan your remodeling design. Learn more in this HGTV Kitchen Remodel Basics video:
1. The basic functions of the kitchen are meal prep, cleanup and utensil storage. Ask yourself how these functions can be made more efficient and how you use your kitchen. Are you single, married, with children and/or pets?
2. The work triangle concept – sink, stove and refrigerator located at the far points of a triangle – originated in 1950. Things have changed since then. Much of our food is not made from scratch anymore, and we need double the storage space. Many household have two or more cooks. A new design concept is the work station approach, where each person can work separately.
3. The work triangle is perfect for singles, but the work station approach is better for families and makes meal prep much easier. Each work station is centered around a major appliance. You will want to have designated llighting overhead and ensure that no two work stations are too close together. Each station will need 15 inches of space next to it as a landing area for utensils.
4. The kitchen island design trend is here to stay. It has virtually replaced the kitchen table and is entertainment central is most households. It offers extra prep area, informal seating and extra storage. By spending a little more, you can add an appliance or two or a prep sink. If you are considering a kitchen island, make sure you have the space for it; it requires at least 42 inches on each side so the cabinet doors don’t bang into each other. You can choose materials that match your countertops or splurge and make it something special.
5. A lighting plan is an essential part of your kitchen remodel, and it can enhance the layout of your space. Consider task, ambient and accent or mood lighting requirements. Make sure your lighting plan fits your layout.
