Kitchen Design Planning – The Basics
Before you undertake a major renovation such as a kitchen remodel, there are several things you should consider during the kitchen design planning process. You’ll want your appliances, cabinets and pantries laid out to meet your needs. Start your planning by sketching a basic floor plan and measure as closely as possible. Show the current location of your appliances, lights and cabinets and include dimensions of doors, windows and walls. Your sketch will be the basis for your kitchen remodeling project. Interior designer Nadia Geller shows you how to get started in this video:
A major consideration of kitchen design planning is the selection of materials. Do you want your kitchen to be painted in a light color or a dark color? What type of finish do you want for accessories like faucets? Will you install quartz or granite countertops? You have many options to choose from, and selecting products can be overwhelming. If in doubt. consult a kitchen design expert.
A kitchen island is a great feature to incorporate into your kitchen design planning if you have room for it. With the range of styles and sizes that are available, choosing one will require a good deal of thought and planning. Your kitchen island should be functional and meet your needs. You may decide on a simple cart, or you can have the island custom designed with the options you want, such as a built-in wine cooler.
A big decision in your kitchen design planning will be selecting the type of cabinets you are going to install. Do you want your cabinets to have a rustic country look or a sleek contemporary look? Do you want oak or cherry? Be aware that different woods vary widely in price, so before selecting your cabinetry, make sure that your choice fits your budget.
The project price is obviously the most important factor in kitchen design planning. While there are many attractive features you will be tempted to add to your kitchen, make sure that you stay within your budget. Just as important, you’ll want your project done right the first time. Do your research on prospective contractors before hiring anyone. Make sure the contractor is licensed and insured and check their references before you sign any contract.
