Materials: Acrylic, cast iron and fiberglass are the most common materials used in manufacturing jetted tubs. Consider how much money you are willing to spend before choosing a material. While fiberglass is the most affordable, cast iron and acrylic are easy to clean and very durable.
Configuration and Size: Jetted tubs come in different configurations and sizes. You should be able to find a whirlpool bathtub that fits your space if your bathroom is large enough for a regular bathtub. Sizes range from 30″ x 60″ (standard tub size) to 80″ x 60″. Before buying a tub, you must consider the configuration (orientation of the tub in the bathroom) as well as the available area in your bathroom. If your space is restricted, get a standard sized tub in a single-person, freestanding configuration that can be installed in the same space as your old tub. You can get a corner whirlpool tub with a surrounding deck if you have some extra space or go with a drop-in tub if space is not an issue.
Water jet vs air jet: Air jet tubs transmit warmed air through tiny jets, creating a gentle air bubble massage. Water jet tubs have fewer, larger jets that are arranged in configurations that target different muscle groups and can be turned in different directions to target specific muscles. Both types of jetted bathtubs will provide a relaxing experience, but you may prefer one type over another. While scented bath oils can be used in an air jet tub, they should not be used in a water jet tub.
Maintenance and safety considerations: You should have easy access to the mechanics of the motor and tub in case your tub needs repair. Whirlpool tubs have an apron or access panel. If you are going to install the tub up against the wall, make sure the apron is not blocked by the wall and can open freely. Grab bars and non-slip floors is highly recommended.
