Incorporating Concrete into Contemporary Kitchen Design
Designer Fu-Tung Cheng describes the features, including the concrete elements, of this contemporary kitchen design in this video by the Concrete Network:
The philosophy behind this kitchen design was to incorporate sculptural elements that are practical and compelling into an area that typically has lots of activity.
The sculptural effect achieved with concrete cannot be done with granite or manufactured stone. While concrete is susceptible to cracking and staining, these issues can be overcome by using it the right places, such as the island and sink area. On surfaces where oils and sauces are used, stainless steel is a better choice.
Features of this contemporary kitchen include the following:
- Center island composed of charcoal-colored concrete in a nautilus-type shape serves as a dining area and includes a working counter and sink
- Long concrete countertop in a celadon green color with a sliding cutting board complemented by stainless steel countertops flanking the stove provides an extensive workspace
- Long band of windows above the long countertop creates a sense of light
- Wood cabinets positioned on one wall with limited upper cabinetry provide a more open feel
- Japanese plaster, bamboo free-form panels that slide open to the pantry, and bamboo flooring add warmth to this kitchen design
