How to Upgrade Your Kitchen Cabinets with Faux Finish

An easy way to renovate your kitchen is by faux finishing your cabinets. Learn how in this video by The Home Depot:

For this project, an oil-based primer was applied first to create proper adhesion for the new top coat, a semi-gloss off-white. Using an inexpensive brush, a brown faux glaze was applied generously across the surface.

When using this technique, use a small amount of faux glaze if you want a light coating, or use a large amount if you want a much denser pattern. The key is to establish a time line from the beginning of the application to the wipe off point. The wipe off point is what creates the effect on the wood.

After about 20-25 minutes, take a piece of cheesecloth and wipe off the faux glaze. The remnant that the cheesecloth does not absorb will be left in the grooves, which is where the accent color comes from. Wipe in the direction of the grain of the wood to create a grainy look.

For a small kitchen, this DIY project will cost around $25-$50 and take about 5-10 hours to complete.
